An unjust peace is better than a just war.

— Cicero

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Weighing an imperfect settlement against a righteous fight is one of the oldest arguments there is, and decent people land on both sides. The case for the settlement rests on who pays, because wars are paid for by people who did not choose them, and justice arrives, if it arrives, after the funerals. The case against is that some peaces are only slower harm. Anyone who has been in one takes neither side lightly.

On a smaller scale the same choice sits inside families and workplaces. Ask what winning would cost the people around you, and also who is already paying for the present quiet, since both prices are real.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which quarrel would you end even without being proved right?
