No man’s knowledge here can go beyond his experience.

— John Locke

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

What you know is bounded by what you have met. You can read widely and think carefully and still find that your sense of how things work was shaped by a fairly small set of encounters, which is why intelligent people can be confidently wrong about lives unlike their own. The limit is not stupidity. It is the edge of what you have been through.

The remedy is exposure rather than argument. Talk to somebody whose situation you have only read about, do the work you have only supervised, go where your assumptions can be corrected by contact. Every enlargement of experience quietly enlarges the reasoning built on it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you claim to understand but have never actually lived?
