It is impossible to love and to be wise.

Attachment interferes with judgement, and no amount of intelligence protects you from it. Around people you love you overestimate, forgive faster, and accept explanations you would question from anyone else, and that is not a lapse you can train away. Whether it counts as a defect depends on what you think good judgement is for. A life run entirely on clear-eyed assessment would be accurate and fairly cold.

Rather than trying to be sensible about the people you care about, get honest about where your reading is compromised. For the decisions that need it, borrow eyes belonging to someone who owes that person nothing.
