Happiness is not a reward - it is a consequence. Suffering is not a punishment - it is a result.

— Robert Green Ingersoll

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Taking the moral scoring out of both is the point. Good states and bad ones follow from causes rather than from a ledger of what you deserve, which means neither is a verdict on your worth. That cuts hardest against the idea that pain arrives as punishment: much of what causes suffering was set in motion by other people, by circumstance, by illness, by nothing at all.

Where causes are within reach, the practical implication is to work on conditions rather than on deserving. And where they are not, the same reasoning lets you set down the question of what you did to earn this. Often the honest answer is nothing.
