Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.

— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A day can pass with nothing beautiful in it and nothing said worth saying, and you will not notice while it happens. The remedy here is deliberately small: one song, one poem, one picture, a few sensible words. None of that asks for an hour or for money. It works because a life is mostly made of days, and a day with a little beauty in it is different in kind from one without.

Make the four cheap to reach. Keep a book of poems where you actually sit, a song ready, a picture saved. Then say one true sentence to somebody before the day closes.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Could you make room for one beautiful thing today?
