Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace.

— Victor Hugo

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Big griefs and small irritations ask for different things from you. The large ones need courage, which is not calm but the willingness to keep standing while something hurts. The small ones need patience, because they are too minor to fight and too frequent to ignore. Mixing them up is what exhausts people: fury at a delayed train, numbness in the face of real loss.

At the end of a day you actually worked through, let the day be finished. Notice the hour when more thinking stops helping and only wears you down. Rest is part of the task, not a reward you have to earn twice.
