Know or listen to those who know.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

There are two respectable positions on any subject: having done the work yourself, or taking seriously the people who have. The trouble starts with the third position, where you have not learned it and will not be told, and you hold an opinion anyway. That third position feels like independence and behaves like noise.

Pick one thing you argue about often and be honest about which position you are in. If you have not studied it, find someone who has and actually let them change your mind. Confidence is cheap; either of the first two is worth more.
