Never does the human soul appear so strong as when it foregoes revenge and dares to forgive an injury.

— Edwin Hubbel Chapin

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Getting even feels like power, but it is mostly the injury moving through you and out the other side. Choosing not to pass it on costs more than striking back would, because nothing carries you along. Forgiving is not pretending the harm was small or agreeing to be hurt again. It is deciding that what happened will not set the terms of who you become.

If someone has wronged you, try separating two questions: what you will do about them, and what you will keep carrying. You can protect yourself and still put the grudge down.
