Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice.

— Baruch Spinoza

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Quiet is not the same as peace. A house where nothing is being said out loud can still be full of suspicion, and so can a person. Real peace is something you carry rather than something that happens to you: a habit of assuming good faith until shown otherwise, of trusting yourself enough not to need the upper hand, of wanting fairness even where you would gain from its absence. It is built, and it can be built in bad conditions.

Pick one relationship where hostilities have merely paused. Offer something small that costs you a little and proves nothing hostile is being planned.
