Tis the privilege of friendship to talk nonsense, and have her nonsense respected.

— Charles Lamb

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Real friendship is where you get to think out loud badly. You can float a half-formed idea, be silly, say the thing that is not quite right, and have it taken in the spirit you meant. That tolerance is not a minor courtesy. It is most of what makes the friendship useful, since nobody works anything out while being carefully judged.

Notice whether the people close to you get that from you, or whether you tidy up what they say. Notice too where you have gone guarded, offering only finished sentences to people who have earned your unfinished ones.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

With whom can you say something half-formed without being corrected?
