We have enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.

— Jonathan Swift

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Belief is easy to carry as a boundary and hard to carry as a bridge. The part of conviction that marks who is outside takes very little effort, while the part that asks you to widen your care costs something every day. Most people stop at the first and call it devotion. What you hold sacred can end up serving your dislikes rather than correcting them.

Notice this week where your principles happen to line up perfectly with your existing irritations. Ask what your convictions would require of you if they were aimed at someone you find hard to like. Start with one small, unglamorous kindness there.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which of your convictions makes you harder rather than kinder?
