When a parent loses their job, the pride in the house takes a hit too. Be gentle with it.
RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE
Work is tangled up with how adults understand themselves, so losing it takes more than income out of a house. You hear it in shorter tempers, in quieter rooms, in someone avoiding questions about their day. None of that is about you, even when it lands near you. It is a person absorbing a hit to something they had built their sense of usefulness on.
Ordinary kindness does more here than advice. Ask about something unrelated, handle a chore without discussion, keep your own noise low for a while. Fixing it is not your job, and you can still make the house easier.
How could you be gentle with an adult’s bruised pride?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
