The quiet one in the group only talks once an hour, and everybody leans in when they do. That’s range.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Volume and value are not the same currency. Someone who speaks rarely has usually been listening the whole time, so when they do speak they are working with everything that came before, and the room can feel it. The lean in is not politeness. It is people recognizing that this one is probably worth hearing.

If you talk a lot, spend a meeting mostly listening and say one good thing. If you barely talk, aim for that one thing rather than for nothing. Range means you can do both on purpose, not that you are stuck at one setting.
