Bad ideas are stepping stones. You usually have to cross a few to reach the good one.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Good ideas rarely show up first, and the weak ones are not a detour around them. Each poor version teaches you something specific about what the thing is not, which narrows the field. People who seem to skip that part usually did it privately. They just did not show you the twelve that came before.

When the first few attempts are clearly bad, keep going rather than starting over somewhere else. Write them down instead of deleting them. Somewhere in that pile is the shape of what you are actually trying to make.
