Being early looks exactly like being wrong, right up until everybody catches up.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being ahead and being mistaken produce identical reactions: confusion, polite disinterest, people explaining why it will not work. Nobody can tell the two apart from inside, including you, which is what makes it hard rather than romantic. Some early ideas really are wrong. The rest only look obvious once everyone arrives, and by then few remember who stood there first.

If you believe in something nobody is responding to, decide what you can afford to keep giving it and for how long. Keep a record of why you thought it made sense. Then judge on your own terms rather than by whether people have caught up.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When were you early enough to look wrong for a while?
