Whatever is trending now started a race before you noticed it, run by people who set the terms at the beginning. The best available result is a competent version of somebody else’s thing. Trends also move, so by the time you are good at one it has usually gone elsewhere. You end up permanently slightly behind, working hard.

Notice when you are making something because it is doing well rather than because you want it to exist. Keep one honest thing going alongside whatever else you do. Being early on your own interest beats being late on someone else’s.
