Take the blame fast and the credit slow. That’s how servants lead.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two habits separate people who lead well from people who merely hold the position. The first is owning a mistake before anybody has to go looking, which ends the search and settles the room. The second is being slow to claim a success, since credit taken quickly is usually credit taken from someone. Together they build trust faster than talent does.

Next time something goes wrong that is partly yours, say so first and without qualifiers. Next time something goes right, name who else was involved before you mention yourself. Try it for two weeks and watch how differently people talk to you.
