The words your grandparents taught you in their language are a bridge. Keep crossing it.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A few words in a family language are not a hobby, they are a connection to people and a place that were here before you. They carry jokes that do not translate, the way an older relative says something, a whole set of meanings that get lost the moment the last person stops using them. Languages fade in exactly one generation.

Use the ones you have rather than saving them for a fluency that may never arrive. Say them badly to the people who taught you and let yourself be corrected. Ask for one more word a week. They would rather hear it broken than not at all.
