Wanting the last shot means accepting you might miss it with everyone watching.

Asking for the last shot is asking for the version of the moment where it is your fault. That is the trade, and it cannot be separated out: the people who get to be the reason it worked are the same people who sometimes stand there having been the reason it did not. Wanting one without the other is just wanting the highlight. Missing in front of everyone is survivable and it does not shorten your career.
