Being loud isn’t the same as being clear. A fire alarm is loud and people still don’t know where to go.
LEADERSHIP
LEADERSHIP
Volume communicates urgency and nothing else. It tells people that something matters without telling them what to do, which leaves a room full of activated people moving in different directions. Clarity is the part that takes work: the specific instruction, the order, the destination. Intensity is easy to produce and easy to mistake for leadership.
When you feel yourself getting louder, stop and check whether people know the next physical action to take. Say it plainly: this, then this, and here is where to stand. Then lower your voice, because you already had their attention.
Do people know what to do after you finish talking?
