Every career ends, even the great ones. Ask who you want to be when the jersey comes off.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
An identity built entirely on one role has an expiry date attached to something outside your control. An injury, a retirement, a company closing, the sport simply moving on. People who handle that well usually had other rooms in the house already, friendships and interests that were not downstream of the thing they were known for.
While the main thing is going well, keep one or two parts of your life that have nothing to do with it. People who knew you before, something you are bad at and enjoy anyway. Ask who you would be with the jersey in a drawer, and keep that person fed.
Who will you be after the thing you love ends?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
