Before you envy someone, ask if you’d trade everything, not just the part you can see.

Envy works by editing. It shows you the highlight, the car, the grades, the table they sit at, and quietly crops out the hours behind it, the pressure at home, the thing they never talk about. Nobody is offering a partial swap. A real trade would be the entire life, including every part you have never had to carry.

When you catch yourself wanting what someone has, name the full package out loud rather than the piece on display. Usually the wanting loosens. Sometimes it does not, and then you have found something genuinely worth building for yourself.
