Your hometown will look smaller when you come back. It didn’t shrink. You grew.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Coming back to a place you left is one of the few honest ways to measure yourself. The house, the school and the corner shop have not moved a centimetre, so anything that feels different is you, and the sense of things having shrunk is really the sense of having grown past them. Fixed points are useful because they refuse to change.

Keep a few of those on purpose. Go back somewhere from your childhood this year and notice what now looks small. That difference is the only honest progress report you get.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Has anything looked smaller to you since you last grew?
