Being available to everyone is the quickest way to be present for no one.

Presence requires exclusion. Being reachable by everyone means every conversation is provisional, always half open to whoever messages next, and the person actually in front of you can feel the door being held ajar. Attention divided across twelve people is not twelve small gifts, it is twelve people being slightly let down. Someone has to be temporarily unavailable for anyone to get the real thing.

Choose one hour this week where you are unreachable on purpose and tell nobody about it. Spend it with one person or one task. Whatever came in can be answered afterwards, and almost none of it will have needed the extra hour.
