Walking at your grandma’s pace is a gift you give her and, if you pay attention, a gift she gives you.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Matching somebody else’s pace is a quiet form of respect and it costs you almost nothing. The other half is less obvious. At that speed the street changes: you notice the gardens, the shop that closed, and the fact that she says more when nobody is hurrying her.
Take one walk this week at another person’s pace with your phone left in your pocket. Your grandmother, a small kid, a friend having a rough day. Let them set it and see what turns up in the extra ten minutes.
When did you last match an older relative’s pace?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
