Pull a plant up to see if the roots are growing and you’ll have your answer: not anymore.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Checking can destroy the thing you were checking on. Pulling it up gives you a genuine answer about the roots, and the answer is now permanently different from what it was a second earlier. Some progress can only be confirmed by leaving it alone, which is unbearable and also true.

Find the indirect measure instead. Is it greener, is the routine easier than it was a two weeks ago, did the conversation go slightly better than last time. Measure at the surface and let whatever is happening underneath keep happening.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What progress are you digging up instead of letting grow?
