Critics find what’s wrong. Mentors find what’s next.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Both can be looking at the same work and both can be telling the truth. The difference is where the sentence stops. Criticism ends at the problem and leaves you holding it, while a mentor names the same problem and then points at the specific next move. One leaves you smaller and the other leaves you with something to do on Tuesday.

Notice which kind of person you go to after something goes badly, and which kind you are being to other people. When you give feedback this week, add the next step. When you get feedback, ask for one.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Who tells you what is next instead of what is wrong?
