Moving to a city where you know no one strips away every label. What’s left is worth meeting.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Labels are maintained by the people who remember them. Remove everyone who knew you at fourteen and the labels have nothing to hold on to, which is disorienting before it is freeing, because a good share of your sense of self was being supplied from outside. What is left is smaller than expected and much more genuinely yours. That part is worth getting acquainted with.
You do not have to move anywhere to test it. Go where nobody knows you for a weekend, a different part of town, a summer job, a club across the city. Notice who you are before anyone has a file.
If every label people use for you vanished, what remains?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
