Build competence that travels.

Some competence is deeply tied to one company, one system, one set of relationships, and it evaporates the moment you leave. Other competence goes with you. The first kind can be more rewarding in place and leaves you with nothing when things change.

Check what proportion of your value is portable. If most of it depends on where you are, spend some time this year on something more general. Portability is what turns a change of circumstance into an option rather than a loss.
