What somebody gave you keeps arriving long after they have stopped giving it. A teacher’s sentence lands properly at twenty three, years past the end of the class and sometimes past the end of the teacher. That delay is not a flaw in how kindness works, it is the normal transit time. You rarely get to find out what you set moving, and that is all right.

Think of one thing said to you years ago that you are still using. Tell that person, if you can reach them. If you cannot, hand the same thing to somebody who is roughly where you were when you first heard it.
