Learn the new kid’s name on day one. It costs you nothing and tells them they exist.

Names are the first evidence that somebody registered you as a person rather than a presence in the room. For anybody new, the whole day runs on being addressed as nothing much, and one person getting it right changes how that building feels. It takes four seconds and almost nobody does it, which is why it lands so hard. This is not charity, it is just being accurate about who is there.

Ask once, use it twice, and you will keep it. If you forget, ask again rather than avoiding them for a month. Use it in front of other people, because that is how it spreads.
