When the whole team gets punished for one person’s mistake and it was you, say so. Fast.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
Letting a group carry something that belongs to you costs more with every minute of silence. Early on it is a mistake and somebody owning it. Later it is a mistake plus a stretch of watching other people pay for it, and teammates forgive the first much faster than the second. That second one changes how they read you for a whole season.
If it is yours, say so before the laps start, in front of everybody, with no explanation attached. One sentence is enough and the discomfort lasts about a minute. The respect you get back outlives the embarrassment by a long way.
Would you speak up if your team took your punishment?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
