Your sibling winning doesn’t mean you’re losing. Family isn’t a leaderboard.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Comparison inside a family is almost automatic and almost always distorting. Everyone gets measured on the same short list of things, usually chosen by whoever noticed first, and one person’s result starts to look like a statement about the other. Nothing about their good news removes anything from you, though it can certainly feel that way.

When the sting arrives, let it be there without acting on it. Then say the congratulating thing anyway, and mean as much of it as you can. The relationship outlasts being ahead, and the ranking everyone assumes exists usually turns out to be nobody’s actual opinion.
