Leaders don’t just point at the hill. They take the first step up it while everybody watches.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Direction is cheap and movement is not. A group watches what the person in front actually does, and instructions delivered from a standstill teach everyone that this is a thing to be talked about. Going first is a way of saying the hill is climbable, which no speech accomplishes.

If you are asking a group to do something hard, do a visible piece of it yourself before you ask again. Take the least appealing part. People will follow the person who is already moving.
