Surfers wipe out, swallow half the ocean, and paddle right back out. The next wave doesn’t care about the last one.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

A bad attempt carries no information about the next one unless you insist that it does. The water resets; what carries over is the story you tell yourself on the paddle back. People who recover quickly are not tougher, they are just not litigating the previous failure while the next chance goes past.

After something goes badly, give yourself a short window to feel it, then deliberately start the next attempt before the analysis sets in. Keep the interval short enough that the failure stays an event rather than becoming a conclusion.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

How quickly do you get back out after a wipeout?
