You can tell when someone is performing quirky. Real originality doesn’t check the mirror.

Manufactured strangeness has a tell: it is always aimed at someone. There is a small delay in it, a check for the reaction, and that check is what audiences detect even when they cannot name the reason something feels false. Genuine oddity is indifferent to whether it is being watched.

Notice when you are adding a detail because it will read as interesting rather than because you want it there. Take those out. What is left may seem plainer than you hoped, and it will be the part people believe.
