Mentorship is partly helping someone distinguish a shortcut from a missing foundation.

Some shortcuts are efficiency and some are a foundation quietly missing. From inside, they look identical, since both save time now and both feel clever. The difference shows up later, when the missing groundwork makes everything above it unstable and cannot be added retroactively without taking things apart.
When you are tempted to skip a step, ask whether anything later will rest on it. If it will, do it properly. If it will not, take the shortcut without guilt.
