Scrolling at 1 a.m. isn’t free time. You’re borrowing it from the person who has to get up at seven.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Late hours feel like found time because nothing is scheduled in them. They are not free, though. They are taken from tomorrow, and tomorrow has no way to refuse. The person who pays is the one sitting in first period inside a fog they cannot think through, and they usually blame themselves without connecting it to the night before.

Rather than banning anything, set the hour you want to wake up and count backwards. Notice once this week what the borrowed hour actually cost the next morning. That is the only argument worth having with yourself.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What does tomorrow morning you pay for tonight’s last hour?
