Behavior is contagious in a way that instruction is not. People calibrate against what they see around them, mostly without noticing, so one person working at a visibly higher level shifts the whole group’s sense of normal. Nobody has to be persuaded, and nothing has to be said.

If you want the standard around you to rise, be the example rather than the advocate. Do your part at full effort and let people adjust on their own. It works slowly and it does not require anyone’s agreement.
