How you treat a server on a double shift says more about your faith than your playlist does.

How you treat someone who cannot do anything for you is the most reliable signal available. A server on a long shift has no leverage, cannot advance your interests, and will not be in your life tomorrow, which strips away every incentive except the actual state of your character. People read that instantly, and correctly.

Make eye contact, use their name, be easy about the mistake, tip past what is comfortable. Be particularly careful about this when you are tired or in a hurry, since that is when the default shows. Small kindness to strangers is not a small thing.
