Padding your résumé with lies is building a house on borrowed bricks.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

A lie on paper creates a version of you that has to be maintained. Every conversation afterwards goes into protecting the gap between what was claimed and what is true, and the pressure grows as the stakes rise. Borrowed bricks hold for a while. They fail when weight is put on them, which is generally the moment you most needed the structure.

Take the line you exaggerated and bring it back to what happened, since the true version is usually more interesting. Then go and make it true if you want it there. Building slowly on what you can do is far less tiring than remembering what you said.
