Good fortune is not a fixed pool. When someone else gets what you were hoping for, the arithmetic in your head says your share just got smaller, which is why a friend’s good news can arrive with a sting. No account of yours was debited. What you want is still available and may be arriving on a different schedule.

When the sting comes this week, say the congratulations before you have finished feeling it, since the feeling catches up later. Then ask what you want, and whether there is a step toward it you have been postponing. Let their good day be theirs without turning it into news about you.
