Cherish the person who laughed at your terrible joke even though they saw it coming three words away.

Some kindness is entirely deliberate. They saw the punchline coming three words in and laughed anyway, which means the laugh was never about the joke. That is a small act of generosity performed so smoothly that it usually goes unremarked. It is also a decent indicator of how that person treats people in general.

Notice who does that for you and keep them close, since there are not many. Then do it for someone else this week: laugh at the bad joke, be an easy audience, let the nervous person land it. Being generous with your attention costs nothing and people remember who gave it.
