The friend who says “that’s not a good look” to your face is saving you from a hundred people who’d say it behind your back.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Honest feedback to your face is more expensive to give than to withhold. Saying nothing keeps the friendship smooth, avoids the awkward minute, and leaves you to find out later from someone who will be much less kind about it. A friend who takes the awkward minute is choosing your interests over their own comfort. That is rarer than agreement and a great deal more useful.

When someone tells you something you did not want to hear, notice the urge to defend before you act on it. Say thank you first and think about it afterward. If nobody in your life does this, that absence is worth noticing too.
