Becoming new doesn’t delete the old files. It just adds folders.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Becoming different does not overwrite who you were. The earlier versions stay in there, with their music and their embarrassments and their skills, and the new material sits alongside rather than on top. Nobody has to be deleted for someone new to exist.

When an old part of you surfaces, you do not have to treat it as a relapse. Let it be one thing you still contain rather than the thing you are. The range you end up with is wider than any single version could have been.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What from your older self are you glad survived?
