Not getting chosen removes the badge and none of the capacity. Everything you would have done with the role is still available: organizing, encouraging, holding a standard, being the person others come to. The only thing lost is the official permission, which was never what made any of it work.
Decide what you would have done with the position and do the parts that do not require it, starting this week. Do not sulk publicly, and do not make a point of it either. In most groups the informal version ends up carrying more weight than the formal one.
