Recruit people better than you at something. Insecure captains pick weaker teammates and wonder why they lose.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Choosing people who cannot outshine you protects your position and guarantees a weaker result. It is a trade almost nobody admits to making, partly because it does not feel like a decision; you simply find reasons the stronger candidate is not quite right. The cost arrives later, in every situation your group cannot handle.

Recruit the person who is clearly better than you at one thing and bring them in anyway. Say out loud what they are better at, which removes most of the awkwardness. Then judge yourself on the result rather than on being the most capable person present.
