Plenty of people show up to celebrate. Remember the ones who showed up to sit in the hard room with you.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Good news attracts a crowd, because being near it costs nothing and feels good. The other kind of presence is expensive: it requires sitting in a room where nothing can be fixed, with no useful thing to say, for longer than is comfortable. Very few people can do that, and the ones who can are a different category of friend.

Make a short private list of who was there during the worst of it. Keep that list in mind when you are deciding where your own time goes. And when someone you know is in that room, go sit in it, even with nothing to offer.
