What you owe the people who raised you isn’t a debt to resent. It’s a relay baton.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Debt language turns care into a bill, and bills breed resentment even when the care was real. A baton behaves differently. It reached you from someone who was already running, and what you do with it is carry it forward rather than pay it back. Most of what you were given was never meant to return to the giver.

Notice what you actually received, including plain things like meals and rides and someone staying up. Look at who is behind you and pass something of the same kind along. Say thank you where you can, but do not let the thanks replace the carrying.
