An emotion can be completely real without being completely reliable.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
The vividness of a feeling has nothing to do with its accuracy. Fear feels exactly as convincing when the danger is real as when it is imagined, because the machinery producing the sensation does not have access to the truth of the matter. Taking a feeling seriously as an experience and taking it seriously as a report about the world are two separate acts, and only the first is always warranted.
When something feels overwhelmingly true, let yourself have the feeling fully and then ask separately what the evidence is. You are not doubting yourself by doing this. You are giving the feeling the respect of not asking it to do a job it was never built for.
Which feeling of yours has been honest but a poor guide?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
